Use the Fear of Being Stared At Hypnosis Script to Help Clients Feel Comfortable in Public
Equip clients with the self-confidence to erase anxiety
The fear of being stared at, or scopophobia, is a kind of social anxiety that causes individuals to experience increased anxiety when being stared at. In addition to physical symptoms such as elevated heart rate, light, sweating, and dry mouth, people with scopophobia can become confused and have trouble concentrating when they encounter a situation in which they perceive others are staring at them, whether in judgment or out of curiosity.
The Fear of Being Stared At Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help individuals move past their scopophobia and become at ease in social contexts. The script presents methods to help affected persons quiet their fear in public and react effectively when they experience an episode in public.
The script opens with a gentle pre-talk that defines the fear of being stared at. The client is reassured that their fear manifests in any of several ways, including an inability to make eye contact during conversation, an severe uneasiness with public speaking, and a feeling that one is being watched or ogled, even when it's not clear that anyone is actually watching.
The origins of the fear is explained as a natural, and even helpful, "protective instinct" that has become overgeneralized. While staring was once a sign of aggression that warranted vigilance, in today's world, it's far more likely that eye contact today is a sign of respect and attention and that most people are too preoccupied to stare.
The script's brief induction begins by asking the client to focus on a single spot in front of them. The client is directed to close their eyes and imagine themselves looking through that spot, into the "distant landscapes" beyond. Embedded commands direct the client to breathe "smoothly and evenly" and suggest that their eyelids have become heavy.
The client is reminded how a deep part of themselves has always been able to "become immersed" in the sensations of the world, whether it's in tastes, smells, or the stories depicted by movies and TV shows.
As the trancework begins, the client is guided to recall the kind of imagined scenarios they made up as a child. They are led to imagine what it would be like to have an invisibility cloak that would allow them to walk in public without being seen. Embedded commands anchor the concept of "retaining privacy" in the client's unconscious mind.
