Help Clients Feel More Peaceful with the Be More Stoic Script
Use the ancient philosophy to help clients find meaning and purpose
With its practical focus and simple values, Stoicism is a philosophy that can provide comfort and meaning to people who feel unmoored or overwhelmed in the modern world.
The Be More Stoic Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help clients internalize the moral philosophy of Stoicism.
An extended pre-talk begins with an explanation of Stoicism. It's described as a highly practical, influential philosophy that concerns itself with determining how to live a happy, peaceful, and fulfilling life no matter the circumstances.
Stoicism is further explained as a blueprint for living a virtuous life. Stoics are concerned only with events under their control, and judge the merits of life solely by the courses of action taken. Everything else, such as the weather or phases of the moon, is neither good nor bad.
The client learns that Stoicism is built upon four fundamental virtues: wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation. Living by these virtues has helped millions of people over the centuries to lead more fulfilling and peaceful lives.
The client is assured the session's goal is to help them internalize these virtues, so that they become a "core part" of their life.
The induction begins with a focus on breathing. A progressive relaxation guides the client into a deep trance state as they picture a "wave of comfort and ease" flowing from the top of their heads down to their toes.
The client is led to notice the peace and contentment that occupies the space around them as well as the silence in between words and behind thoughts.
The script guides the client to get a real sense of what flourishing, deep happiness, and peace of mind mean to them. They are urged to understand how it would feel to "ride the waves" of life's ups and down without trying to control them, but to instead focus their attention on living with virtues and seeking truth.
The client is shown how seeking truth naturally leads to doing the right thing and acting with love, in both the biggest and smallest of ways.
Now, the client is asked to discover their own sense of what is healthy, what is enjoyable, and what is excessive. They are guided to feel "the power" in moderation in all facets of life - including food, work, socializing, exercise, and rest. An embedded command instructs them to "find dynamic balance" in their lives that does not lift one part over others, but cultivates all parts like a well-tended garden.
Attention is then turned toward courage, specifically the ability to live virtuously in the face of calamity. To demonstrate this idea, a story is told about a Stoic man on a ship. The man looks scared as a thunderstorm begins overhead, but seems serene as the storm continues. The man explains that his philosophy does not eliminate his fear, but rather allows him to observe his emotion and allow it to pass, instead of being governed by it.
An extended metaphor is used to explain the Stoic emphasis on virtue. Just as an archer has control over the pull, aim, and release of an arrow, they are not responsible for events that affect the arrow mid flight. Through an embedded command, the client is instructed to "let go of trying to control" things that are beyond their ability to affect. They are guided to notice how letting go can bring relief.
The client is now guided to find themselves in the middle of a circle drawn on the ground of a wide open space. The four Stoic virtues surround the circle, and the client is led to examine each virtue in detail, sensing how it applies to their lives.
An embedded command directs the client to "invite these four virtues" into their life. The client is urged to feel the merge into the feelings of those virtues and to feel a sense of "walking these changes" in the upcoming days. They are asked to get a sense of how these virtues will affect their dealings with others and how it will feel to "let go" of things not under their control.
The client is urged to be like the Stoics who felt at peace with all outcomes as long they acted virtuously. Embedded commands instruct the client to "discover this new peace" of Stoicism and to internalize the notion that they can handle any situation with the peace of mind and sense of calm that stem from the practice of Stoic virtues.
