Help Clients to Overcome Separation Anxiety
Use hypnosis to calm your clients' worries and rebuild their self-confidence
When an adult experiences severe separation anxiety, much of their life grinds to a halt. Everyday tasks become near impossible to accomplish as the mind is flooded with repeated intrusive thoughts about the dangers that may befall their loved ones.
The Separation Anxiety for Adults Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was created to help clients maintain a sense of connection to their loved ones even when they are absent, while rebuilding confidence and trust in their own abilities.
The pre-talk acquaints clients with the basics of separation anxiety. They are reminded that it is not uncommon for separation anxiety to manifest in adults as well as children. They receive reassurance that hypnosis can help them overcome separation anxiety and get back to living a life free of the recurrent feelings of doom that flood their minds.
During the induction, the client is progressively relaxed into a deeply calm state through flowing language and deep breathing. The client is asked to recall a time and place when they were content and very much at ease. They are encouraged to re-experience those feelings of calmness as waves flowing through their body.
With the client now deeply relaxed, the trancework begins by reminding the client of the changes they've made in the past - not only have they grown through spontaneous changes, they've also outgrown many things, be they old bits of clothing, particular genres of music, or childhood fears of monsters in closets. The client is prompted to realize that they no longer think about the shoes they outgrew or the monsters they used to fear, proving that it is possible to "naturally move on from what's no longer relevant."
The focus returns to the present, where the client is introduced to the part of themselves that has been working tirelessly to keep them safe - a part that labors under the impression that the client must be near a certain person, and "sets off the alarm" when they're apart.
Now the client is asked to remember what it has felt like when the object of their separation anxiety has been absent. They are guided to notice the physical and mental sensations they felt when this last happened. Before they stay too long with those feelings, the client is asked to "move that part of you outside of you" and look at it from afar. As they do so, they notice that the stressed part of themselves looks small and vulnerable.
Having gained a sense of distance from the part of themselves that experiences separation anxiety, clients are guided to discover that they're in control, and urged to feel a "growing sense of inner strength" in all that they've accomplished and all the ways they've grown.
The client is compared to a tree with strong, stable, deep roots and a wide network of branches and leaves, drawing vitality and resources from all around them. The client is guided to realize that the part of themselves that feels the separation anxiety is only a small part of a larger organism "with deep inner resources." That small part is given permission to relax through an embedded command.
Building further on the tree metaphor, the client is guided to feel a "golden light" channelling resources from the strong, stable core of the tree into the weak and vulnerable portion. The client is guided to feel fuller, taller, and more grounded as they draw their "life force" from their deep, powerful roots.
Next, the client hears the story of a woman who felt homesick for her family in another country. Through hypnosis, the woman was able to feel a deep connection to her relatives despite the distance. By listening to the script as it was read to the woman, the client is able to absorb this sense of connection with no sense of pressure to respond to it directly.
Now a fable is presented of a boy who learns to ride a bike with his father's hand on the seat. One day, he looks back and suddenly realizes his father is no longer guiding him - he's been cycling on his own. He is filled with a sense of exhilaration and freedom, giving the client a taste of how it will feel to finally break free of the shackles of their separation anxiety.
We return to the homesick woman to find that she is now able to feel a "deep, effortless, natural connection" to her family whenever she needs to. Her mind is clear, and she is finally able to focus on other things.
It is now suggested that the small, anxious part of the client can experience this same change. The client is guided to notice the difference this new attitude makes to both their experience of past events and their approach to future events. They are invited to fully integrate this change, and to get a sense of what it will be like to feel free to do new things and enjoy life more fully.
