Help Medical Professionals Heal with the Loss of a Patient Hypnosis Script
Teach clients to manage emotions during trying times
Medical professionals know they have to deal with death, but sometimes their professional detachment fails and they find themselves deeply affected by a patient's death. The issue often presents alongside feelings of self-blame, guilt, or frustration that can cause emotional suffering, reduce their quality of life, and undermine their self-esteem at work.
The Loss of Patient Hypnosis Script from The Script Collection was put together to help medical professionals process and work through their feelings in a way that allows them to get back to working effectively.
The script begins with a brief pre-talk that provides helpful context for dealing with loss. The client is assured that, despite their training and professional distance, their humanity will always make them susceptible to deep feelings around death. These feelings may arise from patients they felt connected to, from worries about their own performance in trying to save them, or from seemingly out of nowhere, but they are all normal.
The client is reminded that trying to suppress their feelings is unhealthy. They are urged to talk through their feelings with colleagues or therapists and to learn how to effectively compartmentalize their grief in a way that allows them to take time to mourn and then get back to their important work.
The hypnotic induction opens focus on their breath, and the client is guided to imagine a beautiful place and encouraged to immerse themselves in the colors and landscape of that place.
Now, the client is asked to imagine a soothing sound, such as a favorite piece of music or a sound from nature that inspires calming feelings. They are led to recall a time when they became completely absorbed in a sound or in music, and asked to notice specific elements of that sound. Embedded commands direct them toward a deep level of relaxation.
As the trancework begins, the client is asked to picture a professional musician playing before an audience. They are guided to realize how the musician simultaneously feels a connection to the music and the audience but tunes out distractions that bubble up during the performance. The musician must be able to "immerse themselves in the music and go into flow" to be able to effectively perform. The client is reminded that a similar balance of focus and detachment exists in every job.
The client is now urged to feel themselves "calmly gliding away" from recent difficult events in their life. They picture themselves escaping these memories by flying to the summit of a mountain, surrounded by "pure and clear" air. From their high vantage point, they are able to view a wide landscape that includes their current self, who is far away and caught up in processing past events. They are guided to notice themselves from afar with a calm and distant perspective.
