Understand the psychology of weight loss motivation

The key to understanding motivation is that little thing of being human. If you keep in mind that you have the psychology of a human being and not a super being, and you work directly with that human psychology, there is a great deal you can do to help yourself achieve the healthy weight loss that you want.

Firstly, you need to appreciate the role that your unconscious plays in the decisions you make every day - including the decisions about what you will or won't eat. We're talking about the decisions that seem to 'make themselves', that happen without your directly 'thinking' about or 'choosing' them.

This sort of decision making comes out of hidden patterns in your mind, a sort of template of 'what to do in every circumstance' that you carry in your head. Everybody has such templates.

We build these templates as we go through life, not even noticing that we are doing so, and they guide our actions rather automatically. Fortunately, it is perfectly possible to update an old template which is no longer serving you well.

Perhaps you're listening to this because you've experienced getting all fired up about a new diet, sticking to it for a few weeks, losing a few pounds, and then finding your enthusiasm fading. Maybe your weight plateaued, and when you stopped seeing results, you gave up on the whole thing.

Many people who struggle to stick to their diets and exercise plans often feel guilty and frustrated. They think that if they just tried harder, they would succeed, but it feels as though they've run out of motivation.

We all know the dangers of crash dieting. People who starve themselves tend to lose fluid and muscle mass rather than fat. When they inevitably put the weight back on, their metabolism is slower because they have less muscle tone to burn calories. The body also downregulates calorie usage, leading to even more fat gain. Over time, this cycle creates yo-yo dieting, with significant negative health consequences.

This session focuses on using the power of hypnosis to build your motivation for a slimming plan that is sustainable and healthy. While I don't know the specifics of your plan, I'd suggest it includes:

  • Taking moderate exercise several times a week.
  • Eating fresh fruits and vegetables daily.

Psychologist Canaro Feta at Ohio State University found that thinking about abstract topics-such as why human beings need relationships-makes people more likely to choose an apple over a chocolate bar. In contrast, thinking about specific, concrete topics, like how to maintain good relationships, had less impact.

Other studies have shown that focusing on the bigger picture, the long-term consequences of your actions, and the reasons you want to succeed can significantly enhance self-control and determination.

This may be because abstract thought helps shift focus away from the immediate gratification of indulgences like chocolate cake and toward a rational, long-term perspective. It activates the higher-level executive parts of the brain, enabling wiser decisions.
